The nature reserve Apel's pond consists of two standing bodies of water in the midst of forested areas partly lying on inland dunes and small ponds. The western waters, the actual "Apels pond", is a mesotrophic heath host with a size of about 50 × 75 meters, which is formed by the accumulation of a Haustenbach inlet and is bordered by reed beds and alder woody shrubs. It is drained to the southwest by a runoff, which flows into the Haustenbach after about 1.2 kilometers of flow. The eastern waters are a dredging lake, which is still actively managed in the east, but in the west has formed a variety of vegetation areas. Both water surfaces are interconnected by a ditch system.
