At the Royal Botanic Garden in Peradeniya, about 6 km west of Kandy, you have the fantastic opportunity to observe a rather large colony of Indian giant fruit bats.

Hundreds of them hang in the high treetops near the suspension bridge in the northern part of the park. Because they are nocturnal, you'll only see a few flying foxes during the day, but when one does take flight, it's truly impressive. Their wingspan measures an incredible 112 centimeters. They feed exclusively on fruit.
