WAREHOUSES EL ÀGUILA I CAN FORTEZA REY, TWO EXAMPLES OF MODERNITY IN PALMA
The building of the L'Águila and Can Forteza Rey warehouses, located in the Plaza del Marqués del Palmer, are so united that they share their structure. They represent various examples of modernist architecture.
On the one hand, L'Àguila is reminiscent of Viennese Modernism, while Can Forteza Rey showed clear similarities with Gaudí's Casa Batlló.
    CAN FORTEZA REY
Josep Fortesa Rey Aguiló, goldsmith of Palma Cathedral, was the promoter of this work, which his son Luis (also a jeweler) helped design, although the original plan of the building also bears the signature of Gabriel Juan i Ribas, as well as that of the architect José Alomar having. Here he had his dental clinic another member of the family, Ignacio Forteza Rey. The facade of Can Forteza Rey is decorated with trencadís with a vegetal design, it has iron railings, a grotesque stone ornament under the viewpoints and it is worth highlighting the peculiar shape of the Mallorcan shutters.
    MAGATZEMS EL ÁGUILA
Gaspar Bennazar Moner, city architect who directed the Pla Calvet de l'Eixample in Palma, designed the warehouses of El Águila in 1908 in collaboration with Jaume Alenyà. This work was carried out by the businessman Vicente Ribas.
It is an exquisite building that beautifully solves the structural need to create large openings and fulfill the commercial purpose for which it was created.
