The rock on which the castle rests was acquired by Meginold in 927. It was previously owned by the Abbey of Stavelot. Not much is known from this period, only that Meginold's descendants - Gottfried and Heinrich - left the castle built here to go to the first crusade (1096-1099). In the 14th century the castle passed from family ownership and was divided between three local families: Brandenbourg, Kronenburg and Falkenstein.

The castle of Esch-sur-Sûre is a fortified castle located in the Luxembourg village of Esch-sur-Sûre.

The first written evidence of the existence of Esch-sur-Sûre can be found in the "Liber aureus Epternacensis". In this book of the abbey of Echternach, it is noted that a certain Nebelungus donated his properties with serfs of "Hesc" to the abbey. This act dates back to year 3 of the reign of Charlemagne, that is to say between October 9, 773 and October 9, 774.
