The Tardelhörn probably originated from an old access to the "Fischerwerder," an older harbor or pier.
Stiftstraße was named after the widows' foundation with its adjoining church, founded by Duchess Sophie of Mecklenburg in 1633. The Sophienstift offered accommodation to widows of all social classes. Duke Christian Ludwig II commissioned the first comprehensive renovation in 1812. A memorial stone in front of the nave commemorates the founder.
The church was renovated from 2003 to 2006. Religious and cultural events are held inside.
