In the mountain war of 1915-1918 the area of the Rotwand was fiercely contested and lossy; The summit area still contains remnants of war caverns and scraps. The importance of the Rotwand for the Austrians especially as a flank protection against a break-in of the Italians on the Kreuzberg Pass. As early as July 1915, soldiers of the Bavarian Leibregiment established an artillery position on the Rotwandscharte. The top marksmen of the Academic Legion held until the last, even after the Italians had conquered the Andertalpenscharte or Sentinella-Scharte on April 16, 1916. In the Austrian defense fight especially the brothers Christl (born 9 July 1917) and Vincent Vinatzer (born 1 September 1917) had distinguished themselves. On 19 October 1917 there were actions of the Austrians as a distraction from the preparations of the 12th Isonzo battle.

The remains of the fort are interesting; the descriptions on site are poor, especially if you get there from the Rotwand lift mountain station via the Alpinisteig. On the Gamssteig, there are already some signposts and explanations along the way to the fort. Apparently, there's a map with descriptions to pick up at the lift station.
