The 59-year-old journalist was the son of a Jewish cobbler from Berlin and had already joined the KPD in the 1920s. After the war he supported the rebuilding of the KPD and trade unions in the Ruhr area and was a KPD member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia from 1947-1950. Two months after the Wall was built, he wanted to report on life on the inner-German border for the “Westfälische Rundschau”. The two border police officers were honored for their "exemplary fulfillment of the oath of the flag and the given combat orders" and were immediately promoted.
