Main gate of the early Christian walls of Nicopolis, known as the "Arapoporta":
The main gate is located on the west side of the early Christian walls of Nicopolis and is protected by two horseshoe-shaped towers. It is believed to have been built in the late 5th to early 6th centuries.
Its construction, with alternating zones of stone and brick masonry, as well as relieving arches and fired brick vaults, is typical of early Christian fortifications in the Greek region and Constantinople.
The gate was in relatively good condition until recently, but suffered structural problems due to the destruction of its front and most of the outer side of the curtain wall, which led to a partial restoration of the barrel-vaulted corridor by the Archaeological Service in the early 1970s.
Between 2012 and 2014, a comprehensive restoration of the gate and the two ascents to the ramparts was carried out under EU co-financed programs, based on studies by the Scientific Committee of Nicopolis.
