The war vehicle, now a symbol of peace, was donated by a group of Canadian veterans in 2006, in memory of the Battle of Ortona, which was fought between December 20 and 28, 1943. The battle took place as part of the Moro River Campaign and pitted Allied troops of the 1st Canadian Division commanded by General Vokes against the Germans of the 3rd Parachute Regiment (Fallschirmjäger Regiment).
The event was so bloody and terrible that it was compared to the Battle of Stalingrad; Hitler himself had given the order to defend the city to the last man. Approximately 1,375 Canadians, 1,300 civilians, and 867 Germans died.
Veteran Ted Griffiths, during the solemn positioning ceremony of the vehicle, recalls: "On December 18, after the terrible crossing of the Moro River and the bloody battle of Casa Berardi, Canadian troops of the 1st Division attempted to approach Ortona in an operation called 'Morning Glory.' With the RCR troops to the north and the 48th Highlanders to the south, the Three Rivers Regiment positioned itself in support of both. At the start of 'Morning Glory,' the intersection of the Four Roads, known as 'Cider Crossroads,' was only 450 meters from the attack front, which was over a kilometer wide. The Canadian troops," Griffiths continues, "found themselves facing a fierce and well-prepared enemy, and the losses were tremendous in terms of men and equipment. On December 19, the 'Cider Crossroads' was taken only thanks to the infantry support given by the Three Rivers men, who lost thirteen tanks."
