The journey takes about an hour and a half along the world's most beautiful bike path, the Ponalestraße on the northern shore of Lake Garda. The road was beaten into the bare cliff of the cliffs above Riva del Garda. Today, the route recommended by a mountain bike is only accessible to cyclists and pedestrians and is one of the most popular destinations on Lake Garda. The Trentino region is one of the best equipped cycling areas in the world.
Before the tunnel was opened in 1990, Ponalestraße was the only connection between Riva del Garda and the Ledrotal. Construction began in 1848 at the will of Giacomo Cis, a merchant from the Ledro Valley. At that time, the street was considered a masterpiece of engineering. Due to its strategic location on the border between Austria-Hungary and the Kingdom of Italy, the Ponale was strongly fortified by the Austrians. The Ponalesperre consists of many tunnels excavated in the rock. It stretches from the Ledrotal to Lake Garda.
From Riva, where there are plenty of opportunities to rent a suitable bike, it's along the shore in the direction of Limone. Where the last houses end begins a dirt road that should not scare. The bike path is also suitable for people with an average level of fitness.
All in all, it takes about 1 hour to get to the typical destination of the ride, the Madonna with the globe in the village of Pregasina. An alternative route leads to the Ledrosee.
