The Gutehoffnungshütte had the settlement built in the style of a garden suburb from 1907 to 1913 for miners of the Vondern mine. Most were recruited for mining from Austria, Slovenia and Upper Silesia. According to the design by the architect Stephany, the "Verkaufsanstalt IV" (Arminstr. 53) was built in 1910, and two years later Bruno Möhring's children's home on Glückaufstrasse (today the community center for workers' welfare). The settlement was between the colliery area (now the motorway) and the Osterfeld marshalling yard. The houses of the civil servant families are located beyond Vondern Castle and Park.
