The commercial settlement, first documented in 1156 and first established in the Middle Ages around a saltworks on Franconian royal property, became a royal town under the Hohenstaufen dynasty. In 1280, Hall attained the status of an Imperial City in the Holy Roman Empire and retained this status until its mediatization in 1802.
Schwäbisch Hall has been a large district town since October 1, 1960.
The town is known for the Heller, which bears its name, as well as for its salt makers, the Schwäbisch Hall Building Society, the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns football team, and the open-air performances on the grand staircase in front of St. Michael's Church.
