In 1941, the Kriegsmarine began building a gun battery north of the port of Skagen, at the northernmost point of Denmark. The battery consisted of four Danish 120 mm guns with a range of about 10 km. In 1943, the area was heavily fortified and four of the eight guns were moved from their open positions to gun bunkers (M272). Ammunition bunkers were also built, as well as bunker systems for the operating crews, fire control (M162a) and close defense.

West of the gun battery, the German Luftwaffe built a large radio measuring station and the entire "Grenen" (the area north of the town) was fortified by the Wehrmacht with bunkers, trenches and minefields for close defense.

The Kriegsmarine generally built gun batteries close to the coast because it wanted to take on enemy warships. In contrast, the army generally built its gun batteries a little further inland, as the army had more experience in fighting landed enemy troops. Apart from that, the guns used by the army were not suitable for fighting moving sea targets. Therefore, most naval gun batteries today can be found directly on the beach, as is the case here in Skagen.

An ugly piece of history right on the beach.
