The church is first explicitly mentioned as St. Johannis in 1474.
The current nave was built between 1611 and 1620 as a simple hall church.
Particularly worth seeing is the richly equipped interior with two-story painted galleries and a painted wooden barrel ceiling.
The magnificent Baroque altar and the organ date from the 18th century.
The church is one of the most remarkable historical village churches in the Meiningen region.
