Separated from the Comacchio Valleys by the SS Romea and connected to them by the Bellocchio Canal, it is unfortunately subject to rapid erosion of about 10 meters per year. Proceeding north, there is a coastal lagoon invaded by seawater, and even further north is Lake Spina, a former sand quarry in the post-war period, now a wintering site for over 40 species of birds, including the black-winged stilt, little tern, bittern, marsh harrier, purple heron, and oystercatcher. It is a nature reserve, like the equally fascinating one at Lido di Dante.
