In the background of the SS 119 Alcamo - Gibellina you can admire Monte Castellazzo, located on the eastern side of the Gibellina Mountains. It is 615 meters above sea level and has a truncated cone shape. The summit consists of a large platform perceptibly inclined towards the southwest. On the other three sides it is surrounded by steep slopes and precipitous walls. On the southern slopes stand the ruins of the old village of Poggioreale, destroyed by the 1968 earthquake. The summit of the mountain constituted a dominant strategic position; in fact, in addition to controlling the course of the Belice River, it kept under control the ancient and important communication route between the cities of Selinunte and Segesta.
