Poggioreale was destroyed by the earthquake of 15 January 1968. The town still bears the wounds, indeed, the mutilations, of that earthquake. Once the old inhabited center was destroyed, the city was rebuilt nearby. Large streets, modern urban planning, metropolitan service centers. Only that almost no one lives here anymore. There were 4,000 inhabitants in 1968. There are just 1,500 today. From here, you flee. Favorite destination: Australia. Poggioreale was destroyed in the 1968 earthquake. As with other towns affected by the earthquake, the decision was to rebuild the entire town a few kilometers away. Unlike Gibellina and Salaparuta, however, Poggioreale was not completely razed to the ground. Since then, the ruins of this town have become one of the most visited tourist attractions in the area. Since 2011, the Poggioreale Antica association has been involved in preserving these places, recovering the documents left in the rubble and trying to revive this ghost town through various initiatives.
