Fort Ord Dunes State Park, covering 980 acres (400 ha), was designated in 2009. The state park encompasses the coastal portion of the now closed United States Army Fort Ord training area. The park includes a boardwalk, a path to the beach, a 4-mile-long road for walking and biking, and exhibits about its former use as a military training area. Because the dunes are a nesting area for sensitive bird species, public access is limited to paths and trails.
