It owes its name to the old hydraulic gate, which was built in 1870 for the recovery of the area.
The tower of the tollbooth together with the small pier are the landmarks of this enchanting beach along the uninterrupted sand coast that rises from Follonica to Piombino.

At the end of the 1840s, a short distance from the nearby Torre Mozza, the Carbonifera dock was built to load the lignite extracted from Montebamboli which reached the sea thanks to the railway. To allow loading, a pier was built where the wagons arrived by gravity. The railway was closed at the beginning of 1900 and the infrastructure serving the mine suffered the same fate.

In 1970, at the mouth of the Valnera ditch, a shelter for small boats was created, taking advantage of the protection of the reef. Subsequently, a fishing club was formed, which managed the moorings in the state-owned part relating to the reef. In 1985, the club was transformed into a Carbonifera Fishermen's Cooperative. Finally, the transformation into a Tourist Port for 150 boats.
