The river rises in Thuringia, south of the Harz Mountains, in the Eichsfeld district, in the northern foothills of the Ohm Mountains between Weißenborn-Lüderode and Stöckey. The well-known "Helmespring" is not its uppermost source and is located approximately 30 meters south of the Helmebach stream. This stream is formed by three branches located on the Elbe-Weser watershed: a southwestern branch (coming from Konrädchenhai), a western branch Die Bucht (coming from Heuberg), and the northwestern branch Schmerbach (coming from Brandkopf and Franzenberg).
