Scotland's ancient Caledonian pine forests once covered much of the country but have declined to the point of rarity. Growing on shallow, poor quality soil, these precious forests are home to red squirrels and birds such as capercaillie, black grouse and Britain’s only endemic species of bird, the Scottish crossbill.
