The geological formations originate from a seabed that existed around 30 million years ago and are now characterized by soft, porous sandstone.
The region is now protected as a SIC (Communal Site of Interest) – a European environmental initiative for the preservation of sensitive natural areas.

The Grotte di Soprasasso are an extraordinary geological masterpiece of nature located on the Bolognese Apennines, in the municipality of Vergato (Montecavalloro/Riola locality), about 50 kilometers from Bologna. Despite their name, they are not real underground caves, but fissures and imposing indentations in the sandstone rock shaped over millions of years by water, wind, and humidity. Their uniqueness is given by tafoni, particular rounded alveolar cavities that cover the rocky walls, making them resemble a giant sponge or a stone beehive.
