The Couesnon River is draining the low-lying coastal floodplain and is responsible for most of the sediments silting up the bay that made the offshore island of Mont-Saint-Michel accessible at low tide. The bike trail follows on its elevated levee with dramatic views along the approach to the famous island, from the little town of Pontorson to the barricade at the mouth, which prevents backflow of silt and saltwater into the river at high tides.
