The building erected as a fountain house was built around 1747 - 1750 to supply the fountain of the hunting lodge with water and to serve as living quarters for court servants. It is the oldest house in the city of Ludwigslust.
A permanent exhibition offers visitors an insight into the nature of West Mecklenburg. A scientific collection with finds from the region is available for research and a seminar room is available for museum education.
The ground floor of the museum is the exhibition area of the Naturforschenden Gesellschaft e.V. and is used in six rooms to present nature and the natural history of West Mecklenburg.
