The first church in Guttau is mentioned on February 25, 1222; according to a document from the Bautzen Cathedral Archives from 1350, it was dedicated to Saint Nicholas. On May 21, 1813, the church burned down completely during the Battle of Bautzen during the Wars of Liberation. It was subsequently rebuilt using older parts, and the church was re-consecrated on November 21, 1816. The complete reconstruction of the church was completed in 1822. In 1848, the tower received a clock, and in 1868, the interior was renovated. The churchyard was enclosed in 1891.
