Cemetery or park - or would you prefer both?

That's a question you might ask about the Assistens Cemetery in Svendborg.

The first impression you get through the cemetery gate is that this must be a park, but even if the park-like feel is emphasized, it is primarily a cemetery where the first burial took place in 1821.

The first burials in the newly established Assistens Cemetery took place on the hill in front of Valdemarsgade, but eventually the possibilities
for burial in this new cemetery were exhausted.

As a result, the cemetery was expanded several times.

In 1896, a chapel was built in the cemetery, and in 1932, a crematorium was established beneath the chapel. In 1985, the chapel underwent extensive restoration, and at the same time, a new crematorium was built adjacent to the chapel.

Next to the chapel are 29 soldiers' graves, each with its own Danish flag. These graves contain soldiers who were wounded and died in the Schleswig War of 1864.

Many prominent citizens of Svendborg are buried in the Assistens Cemetery, including the city's honorary citizen, poet Johannes Jørgensen, and the governor Brockenhuus Schack.
