Lithuania is known as the "country of the storks," with an estimated 50,000 white storks residing there, according to Cyprus Travel Writers & Journalists Society. The white stork was even declared the national bird in 1973. In 2016, there were roughly 20,000 breeding pairs, and the population is considered stable. A specific project counted approximately 22,000 white stork nests in Lithuania.
