Don't be fooled by the tranquility of the place. The lighthouse was built in 1831 by Robert Stevenson and old accounts tell that, during great storms, waves would throw water and even stones up to the height of the light. The wind and sea battered the cliff so hard that those who lived here described the entire lighthouse trembling as if there were an earthquake.

At about 90 metres above sea level, Dunnet Head is not only the most northerly point of mainland Great Britain. During World War II, this place became an important observation post. From here, radar and observers monitored the Pentland Firth and the movements of ships and aircraft that could threaten Scapa Flow, the large British naval base in Orkney.
