The Battle of Gavere began roughly on this plain. The Ghent army arrived there after a three-hour march under the blazing sun. They didn't have much time to form up, as the Burgundian vanguard was already waiting. The fighting was evenly matched until the Ghent army's gunpowder supply exploded with a bang. This caused panic, and many Ghent residents fled toward the Scheldt, where most of them drowned.
