Built in 1842 in the late Classical style according to designs by Henryk Marconi, it was constructed adjacent to the Kraków Gate, which functions as the town hall tower. The current building replaced an earlier Gothic town hall that was demolished in the early 19th century.

The clock on the town hall tower was installed in 1940 and originally came from the tower of St. Michael's Church, which had been destroyed by German occupiers during World War II.
