The small town of Châtenois, with a population of approximately 4,300, is located in the Grand Est region of the Bas-Rhin department, in the Sélestat-Erstein arrondissement. Châtenois is a wine-growing municipality located at the foot of Hahnenberg (530 m) in the foothills of the Vosges Mountains, on the Alsace Wine Route, on the Alsace Vineyard Cycle Route EuroVelo 5.

Before the town was founded, the Romans planted a chestnut forest there. Hence, the French place name "Châtenois" is synonymous with the original dialectal, Alemannic name "Keschtaholtz" - "Kestenholz" (chestnut wood) and "Kastanienholz" (chestnut wood) in High German. In 1807, the village adopted its current name, Châtenois. In 1871, it was Germanized as Kestenholz before regaining its French name after the Second World War.

Châtenois has a beautiful old town, the main tourist mile is located on Rue du Maréchal Focch.
