Since its opening on July 12, 1959, the airfield has been operated by the LSC Bayer Leverkusen sports club.

The club, which initially operated at Butzweiler Hof Airport in Cologne after the end of World War II, built the first hangars and club facilities around 1960.

For several years, the club has hosted an annual air show. In 2012, the Royal Jordanian Falcons, the aerobatic team of the Jordanian royal family, performed there.
