Tips

  • As the region's lifeline, the Wupper is fed by more than ten dams along its approximately 113 km length. Due to the high level of industrialization, it often had to make its water available for bleaching or as a driving force for water wheels and turbines - grinding mills, textile and chemical industries still line its path today.
After the Wupper was one of the most polluted bodies of water in Germany in the 1970s, extensive protective measures were taken, thanks to which the river now supports a species-rich and healthy flora and fauna. (Source: bikeline, Bergisches Land).

  • Very nice section of the route that puts the underrated Wupper in a great light.
