The Erlangen City Museum is housed in the Old Town Hall, which is now a listed building. On around 1,000 square meters of exhibition space, mainly exhibitions about the history of the city of Erlangen are shown, but changing exhibitions, for example on the subjects of science and medicine, can also be seen.

The old town hall was built between 1733 and 1740 based on designs by Johann Georg Weiß. Earlier buildings on the same site were destroyed in the Thirty Years War and the fire in the old town in 1706. Until 1812, when the old and new towns merged, it served as the seat of the Erlangen magistrate. The city museum has been housed here since 1964, and the city archives were also located here from 1964–2011.
