In 1218, Emperor Otto IV died on the castle hill, where the imperial insignia were kept until 2010. The castle changed hands several times until the 16th century, when Duke Augustus the Younger had it demolished in 1650.

Since then, the castle remains have been subject to repeated excavations and security measures. In the meantime, the "Förderverein Historischer Burgberg Bad Harzburg e.V." (Friends of the Historical Castle Hill Bad Harzburg e.V.) has been founded.
