The fortification, now called Tiefburg, was originally located northwest of the former village of Handschuhsheim. It was a moated castle fed by the Mühlbach stream, whose moats still characterize the village's appearance today. Its origins are unknown, but it existed as early as the late 13th century. Some structural elements indicate alterations in the 16th century. Initially owned by the Lords of Handschuhsheim, the castle passed to the Lords of Helmstatt. It was repeatedly destroyed during the Thirty Years' War and remained uninhabitable thereafter. It was not until the beginning of the 20th century that it was renovated and partially restored to use.
