Under the management of BEB Erdgas und Erdöl GmbH, in a consortium with Mobil Erdgas und Erdöl GmbH, a total of 856,000 tons of crude oil were extracted from the Varel oil field between 1957 and 1993 from 16 production wells and four auxiliary wells equipped with deep pump drives - such as the one displayed here as a memorial.
In 1996, the Varel oil field was released from mining supervision by the Meppen Mining Authority following completion of backfilling and recultivation.
