So close to the sea, the Varel Forest is a wonderful place for local recreation. Ten percent of the city of Varel consists of forest, hence the slogan "Varel - city between forest and sea". Unfortunately, the A29 cuts through the wooded area.

The forest can be reached from the city center in a few minutes. Windallee, with its beautiful shady trees and well-preserved villas, leads from Schlossplatz straight to the entrance to the forest with its distinctive white gate, the "stone pillars". Until the 1850s, Varel had a castle and the Windallee in front of the white gate and the "Große Allee" behind it were bridle paths of the count's rulers.

At the end of the Windallee are the stone pillars that show the entrance to the Varel Forest.

The stone pillars at the entrance to the forest also symbolize the slogan "Varel - city between forest and sea". From the castle square you can already see the white gate and reach it quickly.

The "stone pillars", which have been a motif for photographers and painters for many years, separate the city from the forest. The "Jungesholz forest adventure trail" begins there, which winds its way through the forest for about 3 km.

In addition to the "Junges Holz" city forest, various forest areas in the individual districts of the city of Varel with a total area of over 1000 hectares belong to the Varel Forest.

        Detailed information:

Until the end of the Bentinck rule in 1854, the forest was owned by the count, with the Windallee leading from the castle square directly to the "Große Allee" in the forest and both representing the bridle path for the count's rule. The "Stone Pillars", a motif for photographers and painters for many years.
