The Romans secured the Danube crossing and road junction with a fort no later than 77/78 AD, from which a thriving settlement developed that existed until the first half of the fifth century. Archaeological finds, including more than 1,900 grave inventories from the largest excavated burial ground north of the Alps, attest to the importance and prosperity of ancient Gontia. This name, incidentally, derives from a Celtic river deity, whom the Romans also continued to worship.
