The first water supply for the upper town was once the Stadtbach, an open watercourse comparable to the so-called "Bächle" (small streams) that still flow through Freiburg/Breisgau today. As homeowners gradually dug their own wells or drew water from the tubular wells on the market square, the stream was dammed here to form a small pond for washing horses (horse wash). Because the water was so shallow that one could wade in it, the square was soon called the "Wätte" (water meadow). However, the whole place didn't smell very pleasant, which is why the city physician managed to have the Wätte filled in in 1792. Instead, the piglet market was held here on Tuesdays until the 1960s (!). This was remembered again when the square was redesigned (1990), and a design competition resulted in the bronze pig dealer ("Saubarthel").
