On the banks of the Lech River, historic houses dating from the 16th to 18th centuries, formerly artisans' and merchants' houses, line the picturesque riverbanks. Many feature late Gothic or Baroque facades and, together with the emerald-green waters of the Lech, characterize the townscape. The view upstream is particularly impressive, where the buildings stand close to the hillside and the castle tower, which towers over the old town and is a testament to the medieval city fortifications. Also located directly on the riverbank is the Baroque Benedictine monastery of St. Mang, which today serves as a museum and cultural center. The interplay of historic houses, castle tower, river, and Alpine panorama can be experienced particularly beautifully on a bike tour along the Lech River.
