In 1845, an 11.1-meter-high cast-iron obelisk with a stepped base (4.28x4.28 m) was erected to commemorate the construction of the Daugavpils-Kaunas highway (St. Petersburg-Warsaw postal tract). On the front plane there was a metal plate with inscriptions in Russian and the coat of arms of the Russian Empire. The monument was intended to commemorate the 193-varst road from Kaunas to Daugavpils built in 1836 by order of Russian Tsar Nicholas I. Its authors are Piotr Šteinkeller and Žarski. In 1932, the monument was repainted, the coat of arms and the memorial plates were removed. In their place, a metal Vytis and metal plates with inscriptions were attached. In 1941, by order of the Soviet authorities, the Vytis and the plates were removed. In 1961, a composition made of stainless steel strips was attached to the obelisk, depicting a man ascending into space. In 1987, it was removed, and a plaque was attached to the obelisk with an inscription in Lithuanian and Russian: "The Kaunas-Daugavpils road was built in 1836."
