In 1934, a museum was established in the premises of the Zarasai high school through the efforts of teacher S. Jauniškis, which was taken over by the Zarasai county board at the end of December 1935. In 1940, the museum had more than 2,000 exhibits. In the first years of the Soviet era, the largest part of the exhibits was destroyed. Of the former museum funds, only one cabinet with several exhibits remains. In 1963, the museum was closed and all exhibits were handed over to the Rokiškis Regional History Museum. In the spring of 1967, the structural department of the Rokiškis Regional History Museum was opened in Zarasai. In 1969, it was established in the current historical building built in 1931, which was then intended for the Higher School of Commerce. in 1969 August 22 the museum is named the Hero of the Soviet Union Marytė Melnikaitė memorial museum. At the end of 1987, the Zarasai Museum became independent, and during the Renaissance it was named the Museum of the Zarasai Region.

After visiting the museum, you can see the history of the region immortalized in the expositions, old documents, fishing and hunting tools and trophies, church literature, clothes, works of the local artist M. Šileikis, sacred sculptures, samples of ancient fabrics and bedspreads characteristic of the region. The museum also hosts various temporary exhibitions, various cultural events and public holiday celebrations. The museum and the public library operate in the pro-gymnasium of excellent architecture built in the 1940s. One of the many organized educational programs can be ordered at the Zarasai Regional Museum.
