The church was built as a stone structure at the end of the 8th century under the bishops of Passau.

In the 18th century, the Gothic church fell victim to fire twice. Due to the great poverty and hardship, reconstruction was only carried out in a simple manner. Extensions and several renovations followed until the present parish church was built.

The late Baroque church with Gothic elements was restored in 1987 and boasts a remarkable interior.

The church tower, including the tower cross, is 48 meters high.
The warrior bell, or Twelve-year-old, weighs 1,489 kilograms.
The Gothic main portal.
The Baroque main altar.
An altarpiece of Mary, St. Sebastian, and the Cross.
The four altarpieces were designed by the famous painter Martin Johann Schmidt, known as "Kremser Schmidt."
At Christmas time, the Hallstatt nativity scene is displayed there.
