Partially still operational, the ancient underground channels and irrigation systems run almost invisibly underground all across the wide oasis between the Oued Al Hajaj and another stream a little to the west. Underground channels reduce evaporation losses, and any leakage goes right into the soil that the palms and other oasis agriculture thrive on.
