The castle stood in a panoramic position on the slopes of Monte Strabut at the foot of the large hill above Tolmezzo, which still bears the name Prà Castello today.
It was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1348 and was probably immediately rebuilt. It was finally destroyed by an earthquake in 1788 and was never repaired.
