The monument was created in 1927 by sculptor Duillio Donzelli, winner of the Grand Prix de Sculpture, in tribute to the many soldiers and civilians killed in Lacroix-sur-Meuse during the Great War.
It was inaugurated by the Minister of War, André Maginot, in 1929.
