The stag beetle is the largest beetle in Germany and in places threatened with extinction. In the Reichswald, there is still a relatively stable population and in order to preserve this, the children and young people (the Waldjugend) built four kilns. The stag beetle relies on old and dead oaks throughout its life cycle. As these become ever rarer, this nesting aid has been used to create a nesting site for this rare and fascinating beetle species out of oak trunks buried in the earth.
