The Eider Barrage near Tönning is one of the largest coastal protection structures in Germany – and an impressive example of northern German engineering. Since 1973, it has protected the region from storm surges and simultaneously ensured the navigability of the Eider River.

    Function & Facts:

Protective function: During storm surges, the huge gates close and hold back the water.

Shipping: A lock allows boats and small vessels to pass through.

Size: The barrage is almost 5 kilometers long – making it one of the longest in the world!

Tourism: Visitors can tour the structure and learn more about coastal protection on guided tours.

    Why is it so important?

Without the barrage, large parts of Eiderstedt and the Eider Marsh would be at risk during severe storm surges. It is a vital part of the dike system in Schleswig-Holstein.

A visit is worthwhile – not just for technology fans, but for anyone who wants to understand how the north holds its own against the forces of nature! 🌊⚓

I found out about the opening hours of the bascule bridge used to lock a shrimp boat 🔝

I was just trying to find out when ships pass through there.

        What a lucky coincidence
