    Fertile humus layer

The Stierstädter Heide is an area created by humans, but it has existed since the Middle Ages. At that time, people cut down the forest because they needed wood for their houses. This created an open space from which they removed the fertile humus layer for their own fields. This created the barren soil on which the heather can thrive. "We have to preserve this historical cultural landscape," says Knepel. That is one reason for the regular maintenance measures. The Stierstädter Heide also offers a home to rare animal species that would have a hard time elsewhere. "Forest lizards, sand lizards and slowworms live here," he explains. There are also many insect species that cannot be found elsewhere, such as the lesser heathhopper.

The Stierstädter Heide, 3.2 hectares in size, has existed since the Middle Ages. The residents of the time cut down the area and used the humus to fertilize their fields. This created the barren soil on which heather grows very well.
